Andrew Herbert Signs Extension With Wild Things
WASHINGTON, Pa. (Dec. 5) – After announcing the re-signing of righty Zach Kirby yesterday to kick off the announcement of transactions toward the 2026 roster, the Washington Wild Things today have announced that right-handed pitcher Andrew Herbert has signed a new contract, extending his deal under a new contract that wipes an option decision away for the 2026 season.
Herbert signed to make his pro debut with the Wild Things in May and made that debut on May 25 in a win over Florence. He struck out four in 5.1 innings in that game before making a second start for the club and allowing three runs over five innings June 1 against Schaumburg with five strikeouts (a career high) in a no decision. His next 28 appearances came out of the bullpen, working primarily as Washington’s closer.
The righty earned 12 saves, including his first as a pro June 10 against the Boomers. He finished the season with a 7-3 record and a 4.08 ERA in 39.2 innings of work. He struck out 35 to 19 walks. The numbers from the pen include 29.1 innings with just 10 earned runs allowed and 26 strikeouts. That ERA is 3.07. The 12 saves were tied for the fifth-highest saves total in the league and made Herbert one of eight closers in the league with at least a dozen saves.
He came to Washington fresh off a tremendous collegiate career as a star in the rotation at Reinhardt University, where he was 2025 NAIA All-American Second Team, AAC Pitcher of the Year, AAC All-Conference First Team, 2024 NAIA All-American Second Team and AAC All-Conference First Team and 2023 NAIA All-American Honorable Mention, AAC Pitcher of the Year and AAC All-Conference First Team.
In 2025 at Reinhardt, he was 12-0 with a 1.88 ERA in 15 starts with four complete games and two shutouts in 100.1 innings. He walked only 23 to 99 strikeouts, a collegiate career best. He was 11-2 in 2024 with a 2.15 ERA in 15 games (13 starts) with four CG’s and two shutouts. In 92.0 innings, he whiffed 94 to 21 walks and allowed only 74 hits, working his way to a collegiate-best 1.033 WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched). He was 8-0 with a 2.82 ERA in nine games (seven starts) in 2022 and struck out 53 to 10 walks in 51 innings. He was 37-6 overall in college with a 2.62 collegiate ERA while he also spent parts of two summers in summer leagues, working to a 3.48 ERA in 20.2 innings between Alpharetta (SUNB) and Traverse City (NWDS).
Andrew’s brother played for the Wild Things in 2019 before being picked up by the Arizona organization after originally being drafted in the 2nd Round in 2015 by the Braves. Lucas ended up back with the organization during the 2020 COVID pod. His dad Mike also pitched in college.
The San Clemente, California native will factor into Washington’s plans as a starter for the 2026 season, returning to the spot on the mound he had so much success in during his run at Reinhardt. Kirby and Herbert are the two pitchers now officially under a 2026 contract for the Wild Things.
The Washington Wild Things will open their 24th season of professional baseball and 23rd in the Frontier League on May 7, 2026, with the homer opener scheduled for Friday, May 15 against the Schaumburg Boomers at EQT Park.
