Wild Things Take Friday Contest in Pearl Behind Two Big Innings
PEARL, Ms. (Aug. 14) – Behind a five-run fourth inning and a six-run seventh inning, Washington upended Mississippi to take a 3-1 advantage in the six-game series by a final of 11-4 Friday night at Trustmark Park.
Kelvin Perez started the Friday affair and worked a 1-2-3 first inning with a pair of strikeouts but left the game with an injury before the second inning started. Washington turned to Eldridge Armstrong III in relief and he was tagged for two runs in the second to allow Mississippi to strike first in the game. He’d end up settling in and worked into the fifth inning before giving way to Colt Anderson. Armstrong received the win. Anderson logged 3.2 innings of two-run ball with both runs unearned. Mack Anglin finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
The offense for Washington came in two innings. In the fourth, Washington got five, scoring on an RBI single by Wagner Lagrange, a double by Cole Fowler, a sac fly from Caleb Ketchup and singles from Connor Peek and Isaias Quiroz, building a 5-2 lead in the process. The Mud Monsters scored their third run in the sixth and then Washington used six walks and two hits to score six times in the seventh. Fowler had an RBI single and Ketchup a two-run double before bases-loaded walks were issued to Quiroz and Anthony Brocato. The final run of the frame came in on a sac fly by Kyle Edwards.
The Mud Monsters tallied their final run in the bottom of the seventh.
In the win, Edwards, Wagner Lagrange, Fowler and Peek had multi-hit games with all but Fowler in that mix posting three hits apiece. Fowler had two. Ketchup drove in three to pace the RBI effort with Fowler and Quiroz notching two-RBI nights. Andrew Czech walked four times and scored twice. Every starter reached base at least once.
Washington will look to capture the six-game set tomorrow at 7:01/6:01 p.m. CDT. Kobe Foster will take the ball for the Wild Things with a league-best 1.98 ERA in tow.
