Wild Things Drop Thursday Contest in Pearl, 5-4
PEARL, Ms. (Aug. 13) – The Wild Things were upended late in a closely-played third game of six in Pearl this week against the Mud Monsters, who took the Thursday night affair 5-4 behind a seventh-inning tally and some missed late chances for Washington.
Washington plated the first three runs of the contest in the second inning, scoring on an RBI single by Cole Fowler that plated Andrew Czech. On the play, Anthony Brocato was thrown out at third for the first out of the inning. Later in the frame, Caleb Ketchup delivered his 12th home run of the season to increase the lead to 3-0.
Mississippi immediately answered with three of its own but the tie was short-lived as Washington scored in the top of the third on a fielder’s choice with the bases full by Andrew Czech, making it 4-3. They’d re-load the bases in the inning but otherwise came up empty looking for more. The Mud Monsters tied things at 4-4 in the fifth, Kenten Egbert’s final frame. He got a no decision after allowing four hits and four runs with four walks and four punchouts in five frames. It was his second start with the team.
The Wild Things got their first two runners aboard in the seventh, bunted them each up 90 feet to second and third but failed to score. On a fielder’s choice ground ball, a throw was made home. Ryan Ford was chased back to third, where he got back safely. Billy Sullivan was tagged out standing at third and then Ford removed his hand from the bag with the ball still live, allowing for a tag for the final out of the frame. Mississippi then scored in the seventh off Michael O’Hanlon to take its first lead of the week at 5-4.
Washington got a walk drawn by Czech and a base hit from Brocato to start the eighth, giving the club runners at the corners with nobody out. A strikeout and a double play later and Washington found itself done for good with baserunners.
Washington and Mississippi play the fourth game of the week’s set tomorrow at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CDT.
Washington’s playoff magic number remains at eight with Ottawa and Windy City ongoing at the time of this release. If Ottawa wins the game, the number comes down to seven.
