Second Half of Opener Offense Leads to Win in Mississippi
PEARL, Ms. (Aug. 11) – Behind a barrage of offense in the second half of the game and six multi-hit performances, Washington took the opener in Pearl against Mississippi, 10-5. A returning Zach Kirby yielded two runs over 5.2 innings for his sixth win of the season, moving to 6-0 in the effort.
Washington scored twice in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings and four times in the seventh, a six-hit inning, to plate 10 in the victory. The Wild Things started the scoring in the two-run fifth with an RBI single by Kyle Edwards and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Antonio Monroy. They added two in the sixth on an RBI double by Jeff Liquori and a knock from Connor Peek. The four in the seventh came in on a two-run three-bagger by Wagner Lagrange and RBI hits from Andrew Czech and Liquori. Czech’s RBI in the seventh was his 81st of the season, setting a new single-season career high. The club plated two in the eighth on a triple by Lagrange and a base hit by Czech.
In all, Billy Sullivan, Lagrange, Czech (three), Liquori, Peek and Edwards all had multi-hit nights with Czech, Liquori and Lagrange turning it multi-RBI nights.
Kirby went 5.2 innings in his victorious effort, returning for his ninth start of the season. He fanned four and scattered three hits and three walks. Eldridge Armstrong III was tagged for two Mississippi runs in the seventh and Michael Foltz Jr. for one in the eighth before Colt Anderson got a zero in the ninth to finish the winning effort.
Washington and Mississippi continue their six-game series at Trustmark Park tomorrow at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CDT with righty Drew Stegura scheduled to take the ball for the Wild Things opposed by Mississippi’s righty Sergio Sanchez.
