RHP Zach Kirby Returns to Washington Active Roster
PEARL, Ms. (August 10) – The Washington Wild Things have signed right-handed pitcher Zach Kirby back to the active roster following his release from the Angels organization. He had his contract purchased earlier this season by the Los Angeles Angels.
Kirby pitched in four games for the ACL Angels before being released. He struck out four and walked two in his first taste of affiliated baseball, and now makes his way back to the Wild Things, where he was 5-0 with a 2.34 ERA in eight starts, posting his first shutout of his career and 31 strikeouts against six walks in 50 innings pitched.
Zach left with the third-best ERA in the Frontier League and a WHIP of 0.840. Six of his eight starts were of the quality variety. His best start, arguably of his career, came June 16 against Mississippi, when Kirby went the distance and earned the previously mentioned shutout. He allowed four hits and seven strikeouts without a walk.
He has been an anchor of the rotation since he arrived in 2023 and will return to the rotation today as the playoff chase heats up. Washington’s playoff magic number is 11 and the club holds a seven-game lead in the Central Division with 24 to go.
Washington starts a six-game series with the Mississippi Mud Monsters in Pearl, Mississippi tonight at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CDT.
