Washington Avoids Shutout in Finale, Drops Affair to Otters
WASHINGTON, Pa. (Aug. 9) – The Washington Wild Things dropped the last game of a set of three against the Evansville Otters on Sunday by a final score of 10-1. Washington’s offense managed just five hits on the day, and only one after the third inning.
Jon Ponder doubled to start the game for Evansville, and moved to third base on a groundball to the right side a batter later. Ponder then came around to score on a two-base fielder's choice by Logan Brown, marking Evansville's first run of the series.
Two of the Wild Things’ hits came in the first inning when they loaded the bases with two outs but stranded all three runners.
Caleb Ketchup snapped a 0-for-24 streak at the plate with a base hit up the middle to lead off Washington’s half of the second, but the Wild Things came up empty yet again.
With two outs in the top of the third inning Evansville was able to get three runs across. The scoring started with an RBI single from Marcos Gonzalez, and continued two batters later when LG Castillo knocked in two more runs with a single of his own to stretch Evansville’s lead to 4-0.
Evansville tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh via two home runs. The first was a two-run long ball by Blake Robertson, and the second was a solo shot off the bat of Dennis Pierce.
In the eighth inning, Evansville used two hits and a wild pitch to score three more runs and extend its lead to 10-0, marking the third inning that Evansville plated three runs.
Washington got its first and only run in the ninth inning to break up Evansville’s chance at a shutout.
Jack Brodsky suffered the loss in his sixth start of the 2026 season for Washington. The right-hander allowed four runs, all of them earned, in his five innings of work.
Tomorrow, Washington will travel to Pearl, Mississippi for a six-game series against the Mississippi Mud Monsters that opens on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30/6:30 p.m. CDT at Trustmark Park on Tuesday night.
