Wild Things Use Four Pitchers to Blank Otters Again, Secure Series
WASHINGTON, Pa. (Aug. 8) – The Washington Wild Things shut out the Evansville Otters for a second straight game to win by a score of 2-0 Saturday night at EQT Park. The Wild Things improved to 53-24 on the season, extending their lead in the Central Division to eight games, while the Otters move to 45-32 with the loss.
The Wild Things struck first as a Billy Sullivan leadoff single set up a Wagner Lagrange RBI double into no man’s land in right field. The Wild Things struggled to capitalize on free passes from Otters’ pitching, as eight Wild Things were walked in the first three innings. Otters starting pitcher Dylan Zentko walked four straight batters in the bottom of the third, allowing Andrew Czech to score and give Jeff Liquori his 59th RBI of the season.
Joe Morrissey entered the third inning in relief of Zentko, getting a flyout to center and stranding three Wild Things on base. After a shaky first three innings from the Otters’ pitching staff, the bullpen settled in nicely, not allowing a run from the third inning on.
Wild Things starting pitcher Ben Kowalski turned in an impressive performance, blanking the Otters through a season-high 6.1 innings. He allowed just four hits and one walk while recording a season-high eight strikeouts on 95 pitches. Kowalski has recorded a quality start in all three of his outings this season. Michael Fultz Jr. came on in relief of Kowalski and retired both batters he faced to finish a scoreless seventh inning. Kowalski was the winning pitcher, improving to 1-1 as Zentko took the loss, moving to 0-2 on the season.
Mack Anglin worked around two baserunners and recorded a strikeout en route to a scoreless eighth inning. Ryan Ford made a great diving catch at third base to record the final out. Wild Things closer Landon Ginn shut the door, striking out two on the way to his 11th save of the season.
The Wild Things will look to earn the series sweep over their Central Division opponent on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05. It’s Halloween Night presented by Pathways on a UPMC-GoHealth Urgent Care Kids Eat Free Sunday.
