Peek's Three-RBI Night, Late Offense Seals Win
PATERSON, NJ (Aug. 1) – Behind a three-RBI night for Connor Peek, who kick-started a late offensive surge for Washington, the Wild Things took the middle game in Paterson, 8-3 over New Jersey, winning the series in the process. Peek’s third RBI of the night started a three-run, seventh-inning rally that broke a 3-3 tie. Washington ended up scoring five unanswered to walk away a winner.
The Wild Things scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning after a pair of 1-2-3 halves. A double steal executed by the runners that started on the corners, Jeff Liquori and Andrew Czech, made it 1-0 with Czech taking home. Liquori came in a few batters later on an RBI single by Peek that made it 2-0.
Jack Brodsky made another hometown start inside of a half hour from Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, where he grew up, and got through three scoreless before yielding two runs in the fourth with two outs on a single by Aneudis Mordan that tied the game. Peek’s heroics continued with his second homer as a pro in the top of the fifth to give Washington what turned out to be a short-lived lead back at 3-2. In the bottom half, the Jackals got a sac fly to tie things back up.
That would end the night for Brodsky, who worked five for a no decision, allowing six hits and three runs with three tickets. Michael O’Hanlon worked an unconventional 1-2-3 sixth inning before Washington scored three in the seventh on RBI hits by Peek, Kyle Edwards and Billy Sullivan, which made it 6-3. O’Hanlon then spun a perfect seventh and Jeff Liquori put the finishing touches on the offense in the game with his 11th homer of the season, a two-run shot that made it 8-3 in the eighth.
O’Hanlon retired the first hitter of the eighth before giving way to Colt Anderson, who recorded four strikeouts and the final five outs of the game in total, working around just one baserunner on a ninth-inning free pass.
Washington will turn the ball over to Ben Kowalski tomorrow as they look for a sweep of the Jackals in the afternoon. First pitch at Hinchliffe Stadium is slated for 2:05 p.m.
