Morton Walks Off Slammers in Sunday's First Game

WASHINGTON, Pa. (June 15) – Five late runs helped erase a sloppy fifth inning as the Wild Things defeat the Joliet Slammers 8-7 in game one of a doubleheader Sunday, June 15 at EQT Park. Kadon Morton’s walk-off single scoring Ethan Wilder in the 7th was the difference.

Cael Chatham, who is traditionally an infielder, got his first start on the mound for the Wild Things in game one. Joliet wasted no time when they got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Wild Things retaliated quickly thanks to the bat of Andrew Czech as he launched his eighth home run of the year in the form of a three-run home run in the bottom half of the first inning.

Things remained dormant between both teams until the bottom of the fourth, when Washington broke the scoreless streak when Kadon Morton lined an RBI single into left field making the score 4-1. In the top of the fifth inning, however, Joliet produced five walks, four hits and six runs. After Washington exhausted three pitchers and endured 28-minute rain delay, Joliet led 7-4 after the top half of the fifth.

The Wild Things picked up their offense though by scoring five runs and having eight hits through the final four innings of play. Tommy Caufield and Sammy Infante each had an RBI and a wild pitch allowed the Wild Things to tie the game up 7-7.

Ryan Chasse worked a scoreless sixth inning before the tie occurred in the sixth inning. The teams then endured another delay that lasted two hours and 10 minutes and saw the entire movie “The Sandlot” played in the stadium. Hector Garcia came out of the delay with a scoreless and quick top of the seventh, giving the Wild Things the chance to win it. Morton had the walk-off RBI single bringing home Ethan Wilder to give the Wild Things the 8-7 win in game one.

Game two is underway at EQT Park.
