WIld Things Take Final Spring Training Exhibition Game

WASHINGTON, Pa. (May 5) - The Washington Wild Things finished Spring Training with a 5-1 win against the Lake Erie Crushers on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Wild Things Park. The Wild Things pitching staff owned the day, surrendering just one run and striking out 12 Crushers.

Wild Things starting pitcher Jordan DiValerio threw three shutout innings, allowing just one hit and fanning four batters. Malik Barrington relieved DiValerio to open the fourth inning. Barrington tossed three scoreless innings on the mound. He whiffed all three batters he faced in the fifth and two in the sixth to highlight a strong outing.

Washington shortstop Carson Clowers broke open the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single to left field, scoring Tyreque Reed who reached base on a single to open the inning. The Wild Things pushed their lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning with some two-out lightning. Reed and Ricardo Sanchez both walked to get on base. Clowers drove Reed home with a double into left. On the following at bat, Briley Knight mashed a double into the gap to score Sanchez and Clowers.

Zach Kirby entered the game in the seventh inning for Washington. The Crushers notched their first and only run of the contest in the eighth on a fielder's choice.

The Wild Things loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth after Alex Ovalles singled, Sanchez was hit by a pitch and Knight walked. Ovalles scored on a balk to extend the lead to 5-1 in favor of Washington.

Sanchez was in command at the plate, reaching base on all four of his plate appearances. He finished with a single, walk and was hit by a pitch twice.

Alex Carrillo closed the game in the ninth inning for the Wild Things. He struck out the first two batters he faced to secure the victory.
