Washington Drops Rubber Game as Boomers Pull Away Late

SCHAUMBURG, Il. (August 3) – In a tight rubber game through the middle stages, Schaumburg used shutdown bullpen work and a three-run eighth to pull away and take the series over Washington with an 8-3 win Thursday at Wintrust Field.

Schaumburg started the scoring for the third-straight night, scoring in the first frame on a groundout by Chase Dawson that plated Alec Craig, who had doubled and went to third on a wild pitch. The Boomers added three in the third, which chased right-handed starter Justin Showalter from the game. Schaumburg’s third was highlighted by RBI hits from Blake Berry and Zach Huffins.

The Wild Things got three in the fourth on two homers. Andrew Czech hit a two-run shot for his 15th of the season to make it a 4-2 deficit. Later in the inning catcher JC Santini hit a solo shot to left, his fourth of the year, making it 4-3 Boomers.

Schaumburg added a run after loading the bases in the fifth with nobody out on a sac fly by Huffins but didn’t get more.

Jackson Hickert worked a quality start for Schaumburg, allowing just the three runs on homers over six frames. Antonio Frias then went six up, six down in two innings to get to the ninth on the mound. The Boomers added three in the eighth on an RBI single by Chase Dawson and a two-run double by Kokko Figueiredo. Then Frias worked a scoreless ninth around a walk to Andrew Czech.

With the series loss, Washington still sits 6.5 games back of third place in the West, with Evansville falling to Florence for a second-straight evening. The Wild Things head home for a three-game set with Gateway, the first-place club in the division, this weekend. First pitch on Fireworks Friday, presented by Coen Markets, is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Wild Things Park tomorrow.
