Washington Falls Late in Homestand Opener

WASHINGTON, Pa. (June 30) – The Washington Wild Things dropped the first game of their nine-game homestand to the Schaumburg Boomers 6-4 on Friday night with a blown, late-lead for the third-straight night.

Hayden Shenefield kept the game close for the Wild Things, pitching six strong innings while striking out seven along the way. He only allowed two runs on seven hits.

The Wild Things jumped on the Boomers early in this night game to a one-run lead in the bottom of the first after Anthony Brocato reached base with a leadoff single to left field and then Wagner Lagrange smacked an RBI-single to right field to drive him in. While Washington held the early lead, Schaumburg brought one across in the top of the second to answer the score.

The stalemate ensued until the fourth inning when Andrew Czech smashed a home run off the video board to give the Wild Things the lead. Then in the top of the sixth, the Boomers scored two on a fielder’s choice and an error by Washington's defense. The Boomers would end the sixth with the lead, 3-2.

Trailing the Boomers and needing some runs in the bottom of the eighth, Washington got what it needed when Tristan Peterson hit a two-run double to give the lead back to the Wild Things.

The bullpen continued its struggles in this one allowing three runs on three hits in the ninth. Schaumburg capitalized on poor defensive play by Washington and putting runners on base due to an error and scored one on a wild pitch. Schaumburg tacked on two more off a bases-clearing triple to give them the eventual two-run victory.

Washington will look to even the series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. presented by Primo Hoagies. The first 1,000 fans to get in the ballpark get a Wild Things BBQ Apron, presented by Berk’s Foods.
