Wild Things Shutout in Middle Game Despite Strong Pitching
WASHINGTON, Pa. (August 25) - Despite a strong night for Washington's pitching staff including seven innings of one-run ball from Ryan Hennen, who suffered a tough-luck loss, the Wild Things dropped the middle game against the ValleyCats, 1-0 Wednesday.
Tri-City scored its only run, the only run of the contest, in the first inning on a two-out single to right by Brad Zunica that plated Willy Garcia. Zunica was thrown out after the run scored between first and second.
Washington loaded the bases in the second for its biggest threat of the night, but despite not having any outs when the bases got loaded, failed to score. Bryan Valdez got a first-pitch groundout and a first-pitch double play on the next batter to dance out of it unscathed. The Wild Things also pushed the tying run to third in the eighth and had the go-ahead run at first, but failed to score there too.
Ryan Hennen pitched seven innings of one-run ball but fell to 9-3. He fanned six, walked three and allowed five hits. Jesus Balaguer, BJ Sabol and Dan Kubiuk combined to shutdown the Cats for two innings from the pen. Valdez got his first Tri-City win to go to 1-0 with six shutout. Jervic Chavez set up Trey Cochran-Gill, who authored a four-out save for his 19th save of the year.
Alex Boshers will go for Washington in the series finale and rubber match tomorrow. It will be Bruce Bell for Tri-City. First pitch on Thirsty Thursday, with $1 Stoney's pints available all night, is slated for 7:05 p.m. at Wild Things Park.
