Things Win Nightcap, Gets to 1.5 Back of 1st in Northeast

AVON, Ohio (August 12, Game 2) - Washington bounced back after dropping the first of the doubleheader by winning 6-1 in convincing fashion in the nightcap. The win, coupled with Sussex County's eighth-straight loss puts Washington 1.5 games back of first place in the Northeast Division in the Frontier League.

Lake Erie got on the board first after its starter Sam Curtis set the Wild Things down in order in the first. The Crushers got back-to-back two-out doubles from Trevor Achenbach and Karl Ellison to allow the hosts to take a 1-0 lead.

Washington responded immediately when Grant Heyman hit a one-out home run to right in the second to tie the game. It was Heyman's seventh home run of the season and his 31st RBI of the campaign. In the third, after Ryan Hennen stranded the bases full of Crushers in the bottom of the second, Cody Young hit his third homer to give Washington a 2-1 lead.

It stayed that way until the top of the sixth. After Ryan Hennen completed 4.1 innings of one-run ball, Ben Vicini got the Wild Things out of a slight jam to end the fifth and the offense rewarded their pitchers' efforts by scoring four in the sixth. Bralin Jackson lifted a sac fly to score Andrew Sohn who had walked to extend his on-base streak to 15 games. Scotty Dubrule doubled to extend his modest hit streak and also his on-base streak before that. Dubrule's on-base streak is at 23 games now, which is tied for the fifth-longest in the league this season and is the longest active such streak across the Frontier League. Dubrule scored on a single by Hector Roa, which gave him his 40th RBI. Cody Young hit a two-run single later in the frame to push the score to 6-1 in favor of the visitors.

Dan Kubiuk tossed a scoreless sixth and BJ Sabol worked a scoreless seventh to close the door.

The Wild Things return home for a series opener with the Florence Y'alls tomorrow, Friday, August 13 at Wild Things Park on Wrestling Night presented by Fathead's Brewery. Fans who wear a wrestling shirt will receive a free ticket and there will be an appearance from former ECW legend Tommy Dreamer. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
