Washington Completes Second Perfect Homestand of 2021
WASHINGTON, Pa. (August 1) - The Washington Wild Things played against the Tri-City ValleyCats Sunday and won to win their seventh-straight game. The final score was 5-2 in a game that saw all seven combined runs scored in the first third of the contest.
The Wild Things took a two-run lead in the bottom of the second inning. Hector Roa scored the first run of the game when Trevor Casanova hit an RBI double to right. Casanova snagged the second run of the inning after a pitch was overthrown to the catcher for a wild pitch.
The Tri-City ValleyCats scored twice to tie it in the third inning at 2-2. ValleyCat players Denis Phipps and Brad Zunica both had a run batted in in the frame.
During the bottom of the third, the Wild Things responded by scoring three more runs. With the bases loaded and Grant Heyman up to bat, he hit a ground ball to second with the infield drawn in. Tri-City's Luis Roman made an error allowing Heyman to reach and when the ball got by and the play ended, two had scored. Tristan Peterson, who had singled for his first professional hit and Scotty Dubrule , who singled to extend his hit streak to 12 games to start his pro career, scored on the play. The fifth and final run of the game was plated when Trevor Casanova hit an RBI single scoring Heyman to make it 5-2.
The Wild Things were able to hold the ValleyCats for the rest of the game thanks to the combined efforts of Daren Osby, who got his second win of the week, Jesus Balaguer, who chucked two scoreless, James Meeker and Zach Strecker. Meeker extended his scoreless innings streak to 34 innings, which dates back to 2019. The save for Strecker was his 13th of the season and the 65th of his career, putting him five off the Frontier League record of 70, set by Eric Massingham in his FL career.
The Wild Things will play on Tuesday against the Sussex County Miners at Skylands Stadium in a doubleheader. The next home game will be Friday, August 6, against the New Jersey Jackals. For tickets, visit wildthingstickets.com.
