Slammin' Sammies, Wild Things Victorious as Week 2 Begins
WASHINGTON, Pa. (July 16) - As week two of baseball in Washington began Thursday night, it was a night of the home teams as the Steel City Slammin' Sammies and Washington Wild Things came away victorious. The Slammin' Sammies used a five-run fifth to pull ahead for good against the Road Warriors, winning 6-2. Then the Wild Things built a lead and held off a comeback from Baseball Brilliance in the nightcap, winning by a final of 5-4.
The first run of the game was plated by Slammin' Sammies' centerfielder Robbie Thorburn. The Road Warrior Black Sox tied the game in the fourth before the Slammin' Sammies had their five-run frame. Russ Olive walked with the bases loaded before John Sansone lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. Dalton Combs then walked with the bases full before Lucas Herbert hit a two-run double to extend the lead. The Black Sox scored again in the sixth but only once.
Spencer Bivens picked up the win to move to 2-0 after five innings of one-run ball. He allowed three hits and fanned six in his first start. David Griffin took the loss after 4.1 innings of five-run ball. Austin Kitchen, Logan Linder and Jordan Jankowski finished the game for the Slammin' Sammies.
Washington got things going quickly in the first inning of the second game. Ray Hernandez doubled home a run, Stewart Ijames, who played in his first game, doubled home Hernandez and was then singled home by Hector Roa. With the game 3-0, Baseball Brilliance scratched a run across as Nate Thompson, who had four hits on the night, singled home Danny Muller. Muller had tripled to start the frame.
The Sox added another in the fourth before the Wild Things plated two unearned, including a groundout by EP Reese that made it 5-2. The Sox plated singular runs in the sixth and eighth innings before Zach Strecker finished the game for a save in the ninth.
Frank Moscatiello earned the win with five innings of two-run ball. He fanned 11. Strecker's save was his third, while Frank Valentino took the loss after 4.2 innings in his start.
At 3 p.m. tomorrow, the Baseball Brilliance Sox and Slammin' Sammies do battle. Then at 7 p.m., the Wild Things host the Road Warriors.
