Big Fifth Inning for Florence Dooms Wild Things in Loss
FLORENCE, Ky. (August 21) - A big, six-run fifth for the Florence Freedom was the difference in the series opener in the two-game trip for Washington to Florence, as the Wild Things fell despite solid pitching outside of the fifth, by a final of 6-2.
After tossing four scoreless, starter Nick Wegmann was tagged for the six runs in the fifth on three scoring plays: a two-run double by Austin Wobrock and two run home runs for both Connor Crane and Ricky Ramirez Jr. This frame came after the Wild Things, on a single by Drew Bene through the right side, plated the first run of the game in the second inning.
Stephen Lohr hit a solo homer in the ninth to bring it to its final of 6-2, which was his first in a Wild Things' uniform. James Meeker and Zach Reid combined to throw the final three scoreless in relief of Wegmann.
The two teams meet again tomorrow for the final time in 2019, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
