Experienced INF Strengthens Wild Things Lineup
The Wild Things announced today the signing of INF Javier Betancourt for the 2019 season.
Betancourt signed with the Detroit Tigers in 2012 out of Venezuela and quickly separated himself as a prospect. After 4 seasons with the Tigers Javier's reputation grew to the point where he was sought heavily sought after by other organizations. On November 18th, 2015 Betancourt was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for demonstrative closer Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez.
On the field Betancourt has seen nothing but success professionally. In 555 career Minor League games played he is a .265 hitter with 535 hits under his belt. The infielder has posted a strong defensive fielding percentage annually at multiple positions while slashing 80 doubles, 16 triples. 25 homeruns and 204 RBI in 6 pro seasons. In 2018 he joined the Sugar Land Skeeters late in the summer en route to their Atlantic League Championship.
"There is no denying the experience and pedigree Javier will bring to our roster. A Top 20 prospect with the Tigers who has spent his winters playing in the prestigious Venezuelan Winter League, we expect him to be an impact addition", said General Manager Tony Buccilli. "Defensively he is capable all around the infield and offensively he is a run creator who has shown to be a tough out. Javier has a love for the game that should align well with the current climate in our clubhouse", Buccilli stated.
The East Division Champions return to the field as they open the season Thursday, May 9 at River City, with the home opener slated for Friday, May 17 at Wild Things Park.
