Late Come Back Not Enough for Washington to Get by River City
O’Fallon, MO - The Washington Wild Things fell short against the River City Rascals in a runs battle Sunday afternoon at CarShield Field. Washington lost 11-9. Luke Wilkins is charged with the loss, striking out five batters in five innings pitched. Joe Pavlovich secures the win with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.
The Rascals bats exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first. A pair of RBI's from Josh Silver and Josh Ludy gave the Rascals an early 2-0 lead. Jason Merjano followed up with a three run RBI double that extended the lead to 5-0. Braxton Martinez finished off the early inning scoring with an RBI double of his own, again extended the lead to 7-0.
Grant Fink got the Wild Things on the board in the top of the 3rd with a solo home run that cut the lead to 7-1. Washington struck again in the top of the 5th with an RBI single from Chris Grayson and RBI double from Ricky Rodriguez that cut the lead to 7-3. Three more runs in the bottom of the 6th put River City way out front with a 10-3 lead.
Washington attempted a comeback in the top of the 7th. Runs were scored off RBI singles from Chris Grayson, Ricky Rodriguez and Logan Uxa. A three run bomb from Jimmy Yezzo brought the Wild Things within one, but the Rascals added an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th that secured an 11-9 final score.
The Wild Things return to CONSOL Energy Park on August 9th to begin a four game series with the Lake Erie Crushers. First pitch for the Tuesday doubleheader is scheduled for 6:05 EDT.
