Wild Things Drop Third-Straight 6-3 Contest to Open Season, Czech Matches Record

WASHINGTON, Pa. (May 12) – The Washington Wild Things wrapped up their opening series with a 6-3 defeat against the Schaumburg Boomers on Mother’s Day. Fans were able to celebrate the holiday and take in a beautiful afternoon at Wild Things Park.

The Boomers struck first in the top of the third inning. A wild pitch brought in the first run before Alec Craig drove in Chase Dawson with a two-run homer. The Wild Things called on Zach Kirby from the bullpen who struck out two batters to keep the score 3-0. Tommy Caufield put Washington on the board in the bottom half of the third with a solo shot over the batter’s eye, his first of the season.

The Boomers added to their lead with an RBI single from Felix Aberouette to make it 4-1 in the top of the sixth inning. Kirby finished a productive outing in relief allowing one run in four innings while punching out six Boomers. Andrew Czech led off the bottom of the sixth with an opposite field home run over the left field wall to bring the Wild Things back within two runs. Frankie Giuliano took the mound for Washington in the seventh. The lefty whiffed two batters in his lone inning of work.

After scoring on a wild pitch, Schaumburg made the game 6-2 with a single to center field from Craig in the top of the eighth. Quincy Latimore moved into the Washington lineup in left field and singled through the left side of the infield to lead off the bottom half of the inning. Tyreque Reed hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Latimore home from third.

Entering the final frame, the Boomers led 6-3. Lukas Young pitched for the Wild Things in the ninth, retiring the side in order. Washington was unable to plate any more runs to close out the contest.

Caufield was the star of the night for the Wild Things, reaching base three times, including his first home run of the season. Czech blasted his third homer in as many games while extending his on base streak to 35 games dating back to last season, tying a team record set by Shaun Argento in 2002.

Following an off day, the Wild Things hit the road to take on the New England Knockouts at Campanelli Field in Brockton, Massachusetts on Tuesday, May 14. First pitch for game one of the series is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
