Florence Takes Exhibition, First Winner's Day Game Successful
WASHINGTON, Pa. (May 1) - The Washington Wild Things opened their home spring slate with a Winner's Day exhibition game against the Y'alls after a quick turnaround from last night's game. Florence took the contest, 4-3, but more than 1,500 students had a great time and Washington saw multiple players work scoreless outings. Jalen Miller also posted a two-hit day.
Washington started the scoring in the first inning when Jalen Miller tripled and scored on a single to the opposite side by Andrew Czech. Florence scored the next two runs in the third on an RBI triple by Allan Goodwin and an RBI single by Tristan Garcia against Washington starter Malik Barrington. Barrrington allowed those two runs in three innings while he had three strikeouts.
A homer by Wagner Lagrange tied the game for the Wild Things in the fourth, but the Y'alls responded with RBI hits by Ed Johnson and Langston Ginder in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Wild Things drew four consecutive walks in the ninth to bring in a run but the next three hitters were retired to end the contest.
Zach Kirby worked three innings of two-run ball with two punchouts before Hunter Stevens, Frankie Giuliano, Lukas Young and McLain Harris combined to finish the final three innings on the mound scoreless. Miller added a second hit in his third plate appearance and was 2-for-5, the lone Wild Things with multiple hits on the day. Tommy Caufield was on base twice and Carson Clowers added a two bagger.
Tomorrow, the Wild Things will take on the Black Sox in another exhibition game that is not open to the general public. It's the team's second exhibition Winner's Day game, presented by EQT. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 a.m. Fans can follow along on the Wild Things' social media pages and here postgame for updates and a recap.
