Wild Things Announce Hector Roa Poster Giveaway For May 11
WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 16) – The Washington Wild Things have added to the 2024 promo schedule with today’s announcement of a Hector Roa poster giveaway presented by the Perryman Company, slated for Saturday, May 11. The game against the Schaumburg Boomers is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the night will include the giveaway and a short ceremony for Roa’s retirement from baseball officially as a Wild Thing.
Roa, who holds the career records in Washington for home runs as a Wild Thing (63) and RBI (315), played for the Wild Things from 2017-2022 before a stint in 2023 with Lexington (ATLL) and the Lake Erie Crushers. The Paterson, New Jersey, native, broke the franchise RBI record in the final week of the 2021 regular season and the home run record in 2022 passing Chris Sidick and Jacob Dempsey in those categories, respectively. In his final season in Washington, he slashed .265/.303/.377 with 90 hits, 20 doubles and 55 RBI. He drove in a career-best 70 in 2019.
The former Astros farmhand spent 2012 through 2016 with the organization before arriving in Washington in 2017at 22 years old. For his career, he’ll finish with 105 career home runs as a pro, 349 RBI and 565 hits in 535 games between the Astros farm system, Washington, Lexington and Lake Erie.
The Wild Things will present a special video prior to May 11’s game along with the poster giveaway, as Roa will retire as a Wild Thing on a one-day contract. Hector has become a fabric of the Washington community as a long-time fan favorite in a Wild Things’ uniform and an instructor at Chris Sidick’s C-Side Sports Academy in Washington. The poster giveaway, presented by the Perryman Company, will be handed out to the first 1,000 fans through the gates at Wild Things Park that evening. Gates open at 6 p.m. to the public.
“It is quite rare to have a player transform into being part of the fabric of our community. Hector arrived in Washington as a 22-year-old kid, bright eyed and chasing a dream. Years later he became a youth baseball instructor, a fan favorite and a role model for athletes across Western PA,” said president and general manager Tony Buccilli. “I certainly value the relationship we have built throughout his career and all the memories he was part of. Beyond all his records, he will remain a life-long ambassador of the Wild Things and continue to impact athletes in their development.”
Roa said: “Thank you to all the fans and Wild Things staff for showing me love and support! You guys saw me grow into the person I am today and accepted me for who I am. I will forever be grateful for all you guys have done. I love you all.”
