Washington Drops Middle Game Against Grizzlies

WASHINGTON, Pa. (August 5) – The Washington Wild Things fell to the Gateway Grizzlies in the second game of the series by a score of 5-2.

After a scoreless first inning from both teams, the Grizzlies got on the board in the top of the second after a two-run home run from Willie Estrada and then that was followed by a two-out home run from Alex Hernandez. This gave Gateway an early 3-0 lead.

The Wild Things got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after a Wes Darvill single and a double from Wagner Lagrange. This led to an Andrew Czech sacrifice fly to left field which scored Darvill from third.

In the sixth, a leadoff walk set up an eventual RBI double for Gateway third baseman, DJ Stewart, extending the Grizzlies lead back to three. However, in the bottom half, Washington cut the deficit back to two after Darvill hit into a double play that scored Carson Clowers from third.

Gateway scored another run in the seventh. This run was scored on a sacrifice fly from Cole Brannen. In the bottom half, the Grizzlies pulled starter, Lukas Veinbergs. He went six full innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits.

Kobe Foster was also pulled, but he was pulled after seven innings of five-run ball. In the bottom half of the eighth, Washington made some noise, putting runners on first and second but nothing came of it. It was the last real opportunity for Washington to try and tie the game.

Washington will take on Gateway on Sunday, August 5 in the rubber match of the series. First pitch is at 5:35 p.m. and it is a Kids Eat Free Sunday. All kids 12 and younger get into the game for free and eat for free. It is also Harry Potter Night, presented by PA Cyber.
