Wild Things Shut Out Bolts to Take Series, Try For Sweep Sunday
CRESTWOOD, Il. (June 22) - Behind Nick Wegmann's quality start and their second shutout of the season, the Wild Things climbed to eight games under by taking the middle game, thus the series in Crestwood, by a final of 7-0 Saturday.
Washington scored the only run it needed in the second on an RBI groundout by Cameron Baranek that plated Hector Roa. The Wild Things added a run in the fifth on an RBI double by Ryan Cox and then plated four in the sixth and one in the seventh to get to seven.
In the sixth, Cody Erickson drove home a run with a double before Baranek hit his third home run of the year, a three-run shot to grow his RBI total on the evening to four and make it 6-0 Washington. Mikael Mogues' single in the seventh plated the final run for Washington.
Nick Wegmann, tonight's starter, lasted 6.1 innings and allowed just three hits. He matched a season and career high with eight strikeouts and walked three, moving to 3-3 with the win. James Meeker, Josh Lapiana and Zach Strecker combined to finish the shutout win, with Lapiana's scoreless eighth running his scoreless innings streak to 15.1 innings.
The Wild Things will go for their second sweep of the 2019 campaign tomorrow in the finale. Sunday's game is slated for a 3:05 p.m. ET first pitch from Crestwood, Illinois' Ozinga Field. Righty AJ Bogucki goes for Washington and opposes Bolts' left hander Chris Washington.
