Washington Gets Offensive Explosion, Solid Start From MaVorhis in Win to Clinch Series
TRAVERSE CITY, Mi. (July 28) - The Washington Wild Things’ offense dominated in tonight’s game against the Traverse City Beach Bums in a 9-4 victory. Also aiding the win was a strong start in the Wild Things' debut for Levi MaVorhis, as he tossed six innings of scoreless ball, picking up the win.
Washington opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI single off the bat of third baseman Mike Hill that drove in center fielder James Harris.A play later, Collins scored on a passed ball.
In the top of the second, Collins singled to plate Harris, bringing the score to 3-0 Washington. Two innings later, short stop Brett Marr scored on a pass ball.
The Wild Things had a big sixth inning, beginning with an RBI single from Harris that plated first baseman Conner Simonetti. Collins’ two-run, book-rule double extended Washington’s lead and moved Harris into scoring position. A sacrifice fly off the bat of designated hitter Reydel Medina scored Harris and advanced Collins to third. Roa singled and brought Collins across home plate, extending Washington’s lead by five.
A double play off the bat of third baseman Steve Lohr got one on the board for Traverse City after seven scoreless innings in the eighth. Then, a fielder's choice and a two-RBI single from short stop Will Kengor brought the final score to 9-4 Washington.
Washington’s starting pitcher Levi MaVorhis got the win tonight, pitching six scoreless innings while allowing five hits and fanning five batters. Zach Strecker got his 15th save of the season for his one-third of an inning of relief as he came on with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth and took three pitches to get a ground out to end the game. Traverse City’s Matt Murphy took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings.
The Wild Things look to sweep the series with a win in tomorrow’s game against the Beach Bums. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m.
