YOUTH BASEBALL INITIATIVE CONTINUES IN 2017!
In 2016, the Wild Things’ established their first ever Youth Baseball Initiative program involving 8 community youth programs and nearly 3,000 kids. The plan was put in place with a two prong approach: focus on creating great experiences and memories for youth players of all ages, and provide funds to these volunteer-based community associations.
“Our goal of this initiative was to engage youth players, across all skill levels, and build a deeper love of the game of baseball. Behind the scenes, we wanted to provide financial support and additional services to the youth associations as a whole. We strive to put smiles on kid’s faces and volunteer’s jobs easier!”, stated program director Tony Buccilli.
The first year showed great dividends, raising $5,000, with every dollar funding the day to day expenses of a youth league; jerseys, equipment and field materials. The Wild Things’ also donated over 100 pairs of baseball pants and 4 sets of catchers gear to players in need.
Buccilli continued, “Finances should never be the determining factor of a kid’s dream to play baseball. If we can play a small role in a child’s baseball experience, that is gratifying. These leagues are volunteer driven and we feel like they should be rewarded for all the good they provide the community.”
Great strides have been made in 2017, with over 15 organizations partnering with the Wild Things. The initiative will reach nearly 5,000 players, spanning from Pittsburgh to New Martinsville, WV. The program provides every player a FREE ticket to attend a Wild Things’ game, with an emphasis to create baseball memories. Additional programs have been installed, on a case by case basis, including free youth clinics, Wild Things’ player and mascot appearances, as well as engagement at fundraising events.
“Local Washington Youth Baseball was our ‘guinea pig’ to the partnership. They do an amazing job with their program and have accepted us with open arms. The partnership ran so well that we became mirroring it with other youth associations across the Tri-State area. Now we are in a position to not only host youth leagues at the ballpark but also spend time teaching and coaching the next generation of youth baseball players. Our venue and our players are an asset for every baseball fan in the area and we intend to see this initiative continue to grow in the future”, Buccilli remarked.
The Wild Things’ are always looking for youth baseball partners, whether they are recreation or travel based. If you have a team or league interested, Tony can be reached at 724-250-9553.
