Washington Acquires West Liberty Star

The Wild Things continue to build their 2017 roster as they receive RHP Mark Smyth from the Florence Freedom in a trade earlier today. Smyth is a graduate of Edison High School (Ohio), who then played collegiately for the West Liberty Hilltoppers and Coach Eric Burkle.

Smyth’s four year career with the Hilltoppers was nothing short of spectacular. He ended his senior campaign setting the West Liberty school record in wins and leading all active DII pitchers in complete games. The three-time All MEC selection went on sign professionally with the Quebec Capitales of the Can-Am League, where he made 5 starts and posted a 4.50 ERA.

Being a local star and living only 40 minutes from the stadium, Mark’s excitement to be a Wild Thing was undeniable. “Very happy to join the team and I think it will be a great fit for both of us! This is absolutely where I wanted to be!”, Smyth said in a brief statement. Mark remains in the area, preparing for the season and offering youth pitching lessons at Total Athlete in Triadelphia.

“Adding a player like Mark to our pitching staff will surely improve our efforts in 2017. His versatility and desire to win are his strengths, attributes we value in a player. We look forward to see him compete at this level and we invite the Ohio Valley community to show their support for Mark.”, stated GM Steven Zavacky.

In order to acquire Smyth, the Wild Things sent the Freedom INF Austin Wobrock. “We acknowledge and appreciate Austin’s efforts over the years. He will always call Washington home and the place where he began his career. We wish him nothing but the best in his 4th season of professional baseball.”, Zavacky concluded.
