Washington Adds Fourth Round Draft Pick
The Washington Wild Things announced they acquired OF Kenny Peoples-Walls from the Texas Airhogs, in a trade that sent INF Ryne Willard to the American Association club.
Peoples-Walls was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2011 draft out of Westchester High School (Los Angeles, CA). As a member of the Red Birds from 2011-2016, Peoples-Walls hit a career .250 and drove in 111 runs. Originally selected as a short-stop, his speed was transitioned to the outfield in 2014 for the Peoria Chiefs.
In 2016 Peoples-Walls joined the Texas Airhogs, slashing 30 hits in 26 appearances. The 23 year old led the Airhogs in hitting (.349), while also spending time manning all three outfield spots. Peoples-Walls will be reunited with former Texas teammate, Leon Byrd, who was acquired by Washington this offseason.
“Kenny is a player we discussed internally prior to the 2016 season,” said Steven Zavacky, General Manager of the Wild Things. “We followed his success in the American Association and believe he can do some special things here in Washington. Being such a high draft selection, we know the tools are there with speed and power. We look forward to seeing Kenny play at a high level for us.”
Ryne Willard, who joined the Wild Things late in 2016, appeared in 12 games, playing both short-stop and second base. He completed a four-year career with North Carolina State University and will be entering the American Association for the first time.
The Washington Wild Things will open their home season on May 19th. Tickets are available at the box office.
