Fernandez Completes Washington INF
According to sources, the Washington Wild Things have agreed to terms with INF Alexander Fernandez Jr. The INF is a versatile defender but looks to headline at the position he grew up playing, second base.
Fernandez played two college seasons at Nova Southeastern and was a college teammate of current Washington INF Justin Garcia. With Nova, Fernandez smashed; 71 RBI, 25 doubles and 15 HR. In 2015 he was selected by the Miami Marlins and began his professional career hitting .277 with the Batavia Muckdogs. During the 2016 season, Fernandez spent time with both the Miami Marlins and the Detroit Tigers where he laced 9 doubles and stole 11 bases. The Florida native is a career .244 hitter and has appeared defensively at 5 different positions.
The Fernandez name may ring familiar to baseball fans out there. Alexander’s father, Alex, was a 1st round selection by the Chicago in 1990. He climbed the minor leagues quickly and made 13 MLB starts that same season. In his 10 year MLB career, the elder Fernandez made 261 starts and won 107 games. Nothing tops the 1997 season when Fernandez was a member of World Series winning Florida Marlins.
“Beyond his bloodlines, Alexander is determined to have a good season in Washington. We appreciate his efforts playing a multitude of positions over his career but we look to stabilize him at 2B. Hopefully that defensive comfort results in further growth at the plate. He has the ability to be another speed/power combo player for us and he certainly embraces those expectations.”, GM Steven Zavacky stated.
