Washington Walks Off a Winner for the Second Night in a Row
WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington Wild Things [16-14] defeated the River City Rascals [16-14] with yet another walk off, winning 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, to win the series against the fellow wild-card holder of the Frontier League.
Both teams used a plethora of pitchers, thanks to 46 minute long rain delay during the fourth inning, that saw relievers be cycled throughout the game from there on out. Right-handed pitcher Aaron Burns (0-0) went 3.2 innings for Washington, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out three. Right-handed pitcher Davis Adkins (2-1) got the win for the Wild Things, while right-handed pitcher Nick Kennedy (0-1) got the loss and the blown save for the Rascals.
The scoring started in the second inning, when left fielder Kenny Peoples-Walls hit a sacrifice fly to score first baseman Kane Sweeney and catcher Kyle Pollock singled to score right fielder Hector Roa, to make the game 2-0 in favor of the Wild Things after two innings.
The Rascals continued to chip away at the lead during the middle and later innings, scoring one run in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to lead 4-2 after eight.
However, for the fourth time at Wild Things Park, the Wild Things would walk off a winner, scoring three in the bottom of the ninth to take the game and the series, by a score of 5-4. Roa had the game-clinching swing: a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score second baseman Alexander Fernandez.
The Wild Things now shift their focus to a weekend, three-game set against the Evansville Otters. The first 500 fans into Wild Things Park tomorrow, Friday, June 16, receive a free Ricky Vaugh-style t-shirt and all fans will be treated to a post-game fireworks show. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:00.
