Chase Cunningham Receives FL Weekly Honor
WASHINGTON, Pa. - Today the Frontier League announced its weekly awards for player and pitcher of the week for the week ending July 2. Washington’s own Chase Cunningham has received the pitcher of the week honor for the first time in his Wild Things’ career.
The honor is the first for the team for either category this season, as Cunningham dominated on the mound during the week’s homestand, pitching his way to two wins. e right-hander tossed against Traverse City and Joliet.
In his first start of the week, Cunningham received a win, his fifth of the 2017 campaign, after pitching eight scoreless innings against the Beach Bums Tuesday, June 27. Cunningham only allowed five hits and walked two, while he struck out four in the victorious effort. It was a 4-0 win for the Wild Things.
The second game Cunningham started put a bow on a sweep of the Joliet Slammers Sunday, July 2. Chase allowed a first-inning run but battled the rest of the way through his seven-inning outing, only allowing four hits and the run in his sixth win of the season. Cunningham walked three and struck out five in the effort.
With the most recent start in the books, Cunningham has lowered his season earned run average to 2.49, which is the fourth-best mark in the Frontier League and the third-best, active mark, with the leading 1.31 ERA of former Schaumburg Boomers’ pitcher Gunnar Kines leading the way. Kines recently had his contract purchased by an MLB organization. Chase’s six wins tie him for second in the Frontier League as well.
