Washington Drops Series Finale at Gateway

SAUGET, Ill. - With a chance for a sweep against the Grizzlies, the Washington Wild Things (36-30) could only manage two solo home runs while the pitching couldn’t keep the Gateway (21-46) bats quiet in a 6-2 series-finale loss.

The Wild Things turned to right-hander Cameron Stanton on the mound and Stanton yielded four earned and six hits over the course of four innings. Stanton allowed two home runs to the Grizzlies in the second inning.

Blake Brown started the scoring with a three-run home run in the third, before his teammate, Brian Lees hit a solo homer of his own. Gateway lead 4-0 before Washington first baseman Kane Sweeney launched his 12th home run, to get the Wild Things on the board. After two scoreless from Brandon Bixler keeping Washington close, third baseman Mike Hill hit a solo shot to right to make it 4-2.

The seventh inning would see Gateway add two runs of Jacob Condra-Bogan. That frame also saw the Wild Things’ debut of Jake Eaton, who was acquired in a trade from Salina earlier today. Eaton allowed an inherited runner to score but managed to get out of it unscathed past that.

That was all the scoring that would happen in the game, as the Grizzlies avoided the sweep at the hands of the Wild Things.

After a day off, Washington will open a three-game set with the Traverse City Beach Bums Tuesday night. Trevor Foss will take the hill for the opener of the series against TC, who has lost nine-straight games.
