Washington and Lake Erie Split DH Saturday
WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things (39-31) split Saturday’s doubleheader with the Lake Erie Crushers (33-37) at Wild Things Park. The Wild Things took game one, 6-1, behind Chase Cunningham’s first-professional complete game, before being one-hit in game two, falling 11-0.
Right-hander Chase Cunningham surrendered an unearned run in the second inning after an errant pickoff throw. Besides that, Cunningham went the distance of seven innings, giving up seven hits while striking out a season-high eight batters.
Washington’s six runs came in during the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, third baseman Kenny Peoples-Walls, singled in a pair. In the fifth, first baseman Kane Sweeney doubled in two runs before right fielder Hector Roa hit an opposite-field, two-run home run to make it 6-1.
Game two was a much different story. Cody Lenahan of Lake Erie drove in six runs including a three-run homer in the second that made it 6-0 Crushers after a three-run first inning for Lake Erie. The visitors added four runs in the fourth and a run in the seventh, cushioning their 11-0 white-washing of the Wild Things in game two.
To couple with that, Lake Erie starter, Juan Caballero took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning of the seven-inning contest, before Roa singled to break it up.
The two teams play the rubber match of the three-game series tomorrow, Sunday, August 6, at 5:05 p.m. Ethan Gibbons will take the hill for Washington.
