Washington Drops Finale, Series on Weird Play Versus Lake Erie
WASHINGTON, Pa. - In the rubber match of the weekend set between Washington and Lake Erie, a weird play that turned into an inside-the-park home run for Jordan Dean of the Crushers, was the difference, as Lake Erie (34-37) took the finale over the Wild Things (39-32) by a final of 3-2.
Right-handed pitcher Ethan Gibbons started for the Wild Things and went seven innings of three-run ball. He allowed six hits and two walks, while he fanned six Crushers. He took the tough-luck loss, dropping his Washington record to 1-1.
Washington scored first in the bottom of the second on an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Kyle Reese. Lake Erie’s Brandon Murray tied it with a solo shot in the third. Lake Erie got a run on an RBI single in the fourth prior to right fielder Hector Roa tying it with a solo shot to left, his 14th homer of the season.
That was the score when Jordan Dean hit a fly ball to deep right that landed by the wall, in between some signage and the sand at the end of the warning track. Roa couldn’t get it in in time as Dean crossed the plate with an inside-the-park home run. It is only the third inside-the-park home run in Wild Things Park history.
The Wild Things now sit back for two days before welcoming in first-place Schaumburg for a three-game set that begins Wednesday, August 9, with a doubleheader.
