Washington Swept By Schaumburg, Falls in Finale 10-4
WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington Wild Things (39-35) suffered their second series sweep of the season as they fell in the third and final game of the mid-week series with the Schaumburg Boomers (53-22) 10-4, Thursday night. Chase Cunningham (8-2) saw his second shortest outing of the season as he was pulled in the fifth inning, after starting on the mound for Washington.
Schaumburg tallied the first three runs of the game in the top of the second inning. Centerfielder Sean Godfrey scored on a fielding error by second baseman Kyle Reese, and was followed shortly by a double from right fielder Zach Weigel that scored a pair of runs.
The Wild Things were able to get on the board in the bottom frame as a single from left fielder James Harris plated catcher Kyle Pollock. In their next turn at-bat, first baseman Kane Sweeney sent the second pitch of the inning deep over the right field wall for his 13th homer of the season, putting the Wild Things within a run, 3-2.
In the top of the fifth, insurance for Schaumburg came in the form of an RBI double from Godfrey, bringing an end to Chase Cunningham’s evening. Washington was able to battle back in the bottom half, plating right fielder Hector Roa on a single from Pollock. The Boomers did not allow the Wild Things to get any closer in the frame though as they added two runs in their next turn at bat, coming on a two-RBI base hit to center field from Harris.
The comeback looked promising in the bottom of the sixth, as three straight men reached with one out, including a ball put in play towards the middle by centerfielder Rashad Brown that scored shortstop Justin Bohn. Brown then stole his 21st base of the season, putting the tying run in scoring position. The Wild Things would come up short, however, as Schaumburg was able to set the next two men down in order. It was then able to add some cushion as first baseman Rock Shoulders singled in a run and catcher James Keller hit a two RBI single that bounced off the glove of a sliding Harris in left field, pushing the lead to 9-4. The Boomers then scored a final run on a sacrifice fly from shortstop John Holland in the top of the ninth.
The Wild Things will head out on the road, with Aaron Burns set to face the Joliet Slammers Friday evening. First pitch is slated for 8:05 p.m.
