Washington Holds On to Even Series With 10-9 Game-Two Victory
WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things opened up a 7-0 lead in the first two innings of game two in the Frontier League Divisional Series against Florence, and, despite Florence outscoring Washington 9-3 over the final seven innings, the Wild Things held on to even the series at one game apiece as the series shifts to Florence, Kentucky.
Washington, as mentioned, got off to a quick start. Designated hitter James Harris, for the fifth time in 48 games with the team, homered to lead off the ballgame. This came after a scoreless first from starter Chase Cunningham. Rashad Brown walked followed by a Bralin Jackson double that set up a Kane Sweeney ground out to score the second Washington run of the inning. It’d add another two later in the inning as Mike Hill singled home a run prior to a wild pitch plating a run.
The Wild Things plated three in the second, taking a 7-0 lead after two, with the effort highlighted by a wild pitch scoring a run, a run-scoring single by Jackson and a fielder’s choice RBI from Sweeney.
That’s when things started to get interesting. Florence scored two runs in the third on a home run from Taylor Oldham. Washington added a run on a Harris sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the same inning, as the score was 8-2 in favor of the host team after three. The Freedom added two in the fourth. Washington would answer with two of its own.
Florence would shut down Washington’s bats the rest of the way following the fourth, while doing damage themselves. The West Division Champions plated a run in each of the next three frames and two in the eighth, and trailed 10-9 heading to the ninth. Zach Strecker, who had come on in the eighth, walked the leadoff batter, game one’s hero, Andrew Godbold. Jake Eaton would relieve Strecker and get the final three outs to end the contest, as the Wild Things held on, 10-9.
