Washington Falls in Game Four 6-1, Loses FLDS

FLORENCE, Ky. - The Florence Freedom took game four of the Frontier League Divisional Series 6-1, by scoring the final six runs of the contest to advance to the league’s championship series. The Washington Wild Things’ season is over with the loss.

In a must-win game, right fielder James Harris homered to start the game. It was the sixth time this season Harris led off a game with a home run. However, it was downhill for Washington from there.

Florence scored four runs against left-hander Brian O’Keefe in the home half of the first. After the first two reached and the third got out, O’Keefe walked Andre Murcurio to load the bases. Andrew Godbold then singled to right to plate a run. Harris overran the ball in right field, and two more runs came in on the play. A sacrifice fly later in the inning brought home the fourth run.

From there it was zeros on both sides of the scoreboard for both teams as O’Keefe settled down before Tyler Garkow threw a couple of scoreless innings. Aaron Burns was tagged for two runs on the mound for Washington in the eighth, as Florence took its 6-1 lead that it would not relinquish.

Starter Cody Gray ended up throwing six innings of one-run ball before two scoreless innings from Tony Vocca and one to close things out from Pete Perez.

The Freedom advance to the championship series that starts Tuesday, in which they’ll play either Schaumburg or Evansville. The Wild Things’ season is over with 54 total wins, including the franchise’s 800th. This was also only the second playoff appearance in the last decade for the team, who, with the game two win, won their first playoff series game since 2007.
