Washington, Pa, June 15, 2016 –The Washington Wild Things (15-13) defeated the Joliet Slammers (16-14) by a score of 6-10 in a soggy contest at CONSOL Energy Park Wednesday.
Kolin Stanley (2-1) earned the win for Washington allowing two runs on two hits in his one inning on the hill.
In the early innings, the game looked to be lopsided in favor of the Slammers, but Washington rallied to earn the victory.
Joliet jumped off to an early lead in the first inning when Carter Bell singled to drive in Charlie White. Marc Flores went on to drive Boo Vazquez across home plate.
Joliet’s bats connected again in the second inning with a sacrifice fly and single RBI increasing their lead to 4-0.
In the third inning Washington got on the board with a Ricky Rodriguez homer.
Washington tied the game in the sixth inning when Jimmy Yezzo doubled to drive home Bryan Haar. Nick Ferdinand’s sacrifice fly drove David Popkins across the plate, and Andrew Heck followed up with a single, scoring Yezzo and tying the game at 4.
Joliet broke the tie in the eighth when designated hitter Hunter Ridge hit a two run homer.
A determined Wild Things team, however, tied and captured the lead in the bottom of the inning. Heck launched an RBI double left field, driving in Yezzo and Popkins. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and Heck scored. Haar advanced on a walk allowing Austin Wobrock to cross the plate. Popkins went on to add insurance with a two run double, plating Jamal Austin and Rodriguez and giving Washington a four run edge.
