Washington Falls to Southern Illinois 4-3
Washington, PA (July 16, 2016) The Southern Illinois Miners were able to hold on to beat the Washington Wild Things 4-3 in the second game of a three game set at CONSOL Energy Park Saturday night. The lead in the game volleyed back and forth throughout the game.
All three of Washington’s scores were home runs. Centerfielder Chris Grayson tied the score when he slapped a bomb over the right field fence in the bottom of the first inning as an answer to an Aaron Gates’ home run for the Miners in the top of the inning.
In the second inning Catcher Kyle Pollock knocked another solo shot to left field giving Washington the lead.
The Miners’ Edison Sanchez scored in the fifth inning to tie the game, but Washington answered in the seventh inning when Left Fielder Grant Fink hit a solo shot for what would be Washington’s final run of the evening.
Southern Illinois went on to add two runs in the eighth when Craig Massey, who drove in Aaron Gates, scored on an Alex DeLeon RBI double.
Washington rallied in the bottom of the ninth and threatened, but fell short.
Trevor Foss (7-3) took the loss for Washington allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out six and walking one.
The Miners and Wild Things meet for the final game of the series on Sunday, which is Faith and Freedom Night at the park. Gates open at 4:00 p.m. Festivities including several speakers will begin at 5:00 p.m., followed by the game. Tickets are available at the CONSOL Energy Park box office.
