Wild Things Drop Game 5, Season Comes to End
WASHINGTON, Pa. (September 20) – A rather historic Wild Things season has come to an end with a 9-6 defeat at the hands of the Evansville Otters in a decisive Game 5 of the Frontier League Midwest Conference Finals, that wasn’t without fight down to the last swing for Washington.
Evansville built a 6-0 lead against the Things and starter Kelvin Perez, who made some good pitches that Otters’ hitters made better swings on in a five-run third. Washington was able to respond quickly, scoring on an RBI single by Jeff Liquori in the third inning and on an RBI single by Antonio Monroy in the fourth to cut it to 6-2.
The Otters grabbed two more in the sixth before an Isaias Quiroz solo homer made it 8-3 Evansville in the bottom of the sixth. Pittsburgh native Mark Black, the Otters’ backstop, homered in the eighth to make it 9-3 and Washington fought for three in the ninth, aided by an error and an RBI grounder by Caleb Ketchup.
In all, Washington pounded out 14 hits and had the tying run on deck but couldn’t get closer. Jeff Liquori led the offense with four singles, capping his playoff run at 19-for-32 with 16 RBI.
A season that saw the Wild Things take home three All-Frontier League honors, the MVP Award and Pitcher of the Year Award, bring in 11 sellouts (including the postseason) and the organization’s best attendance overall since 2010 comes to a close. In the coming weeks, big plans for 2027, the 25th season of the team’s history in Washington, will be unveiled. Stay tuned!
