Washington Drops Hectic Game One in Evansville
EVANSVILLE, In. (Sept. 15) – The Washington Wild Things left seven on base in the first four innings of the game while it was still within arm’s length, their early deficit aided by two very costly errors that allowed four unearned runs to score for Evansville, in Game 1 of the Midwest Finals Tuesday night at Bosse Field. A 14-13 loss to the Otters was the result despite Washington having the tying and go-ahead runs on base on two occasions late.
Washington left a runner aboard in the first in an otherwise quiet first inning before Evansville grabbed the game’s first two runs on a double by Blake Robertson that followed a would-be inning-ending ground ball to third. The error kept the threat alive and Robertson cashed in, giving the Otters a 2-0 lead.
Washington got on the board in the second on a sacrifice fly by Antonio Monroy, but that’s all they got on the first of three bases-loaded, no outs situations on the night. The Otters grabbed three more in the third after it looked like they’d only plate one. A bases-loaded walk to Jon Ponder brought the first in. Anthony Brocato dropped a fly ball that was in his glove allowing two runs to score to make it 5-1 Evansville through three. The Otters added three on a Logan Brown homer in the fourth and took an 8-1 lead to and through the fifth.
The Wild Things got their next tally on a sac fly by Miles Simington but that was answered by Brown’s second homer of the game. That’s when things got interesting.
Washington plated six runs in the seventh inning on a fielder’s choice by Cole Fowler, a three-run double by Monroy, a fielder’s choice by Kyle Edwards and a single by Andrew Czech. That made it a one-run game before Anthony Brocato flied out to the track in left to end the inning. Michael Foltz Jr. got a big zero in the bottom half but Washington couldn’t muster anything in the eighth.
Evansville plated five of its own off the combo of Mack Anglin and Landon Ginn in the eighth.
But Washington, even down 14-8, wasn’t done yet. A bases-loaded walk to Brocato followed by two-run singles by Jeff Liquori and Caleb Ketchup brought Washington within a run again and they got runners to second and third before Antonio Monroy lost a battle with a strikeout to end the affair.
Kobe Foster is scheduled to pitch in Game 2 tomorrow against Evansville’s Garret Simpson. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35/6:35 p.m. CDT.
