Washington Captures Central Crown With 10-5 Win Over Grizzlies
WASHINGTON, Pa. (Sept. 2)– The Wild Things jumped out to a 10-0 lead Wednesday and secured their second-straight division championship in the Frontier League’s Central Division with a 10-5 win against Gateway in Wednesday’s middle game at EQT Park. The game was highlighted by a strong start from Kenten Egbert in a bounce back and homers by Anthony Brocato and Caleb Ketchup.
Washington plated three runs in the first inning on a two-run homer by Brocato and an RBI single by Connor Peek. Brocato’s homer was his 36th of the season and 123rd of his career in the league. The 36th tied Morgan Burkhart for the single-season record. Burkhart, the MVP award’s namesake, did it in 80 games in 1998.
Kyle Edwards lifted a sac fly in the second followed by Brocato’s RBI single, which was the second of his four hits in the win. Ketchup’s two-run homer in the third made it 7-0. Washington got another RBI knock from Connor Peek to make it 8-0 in the fourth and added two in the sixth on an infield hit by Antonio Monroy and an error, making it 10-0.
Kenten Egbert, who got beat up a bit last Wednesday in Sauget, rebounded very well. He allowed just two hits in 6.1 innings, allowing his first and only run on a solo homer in the seventh. Egbert fanned six. Michael Foltz Jr. was tagged with a grand slam after three free passes following Egbert’s departure.
Eldridge Armstrong III threw a scoreless eighth and Landon Ginn a clean ninth with a pair of strikeouts to end the game.
Washington and Gateway will play the finale of the series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. It’s College Colors Night on a Thirsty Thursday presented by the Molson Coors Beverage Company.
